“One of a Kind John Coltrane Dolls”

These two dolls were created using fired stoneware, wool, and cotton with miniature saxophones.

After studying images of Coltrane, I sculpted the heads, hands and feet using stoneware that was then fired and painted. I then constructed the armatures that support the bodies. Using fine wool suiting and shirting material, i designed and dewed his suit and shirt by hand. The final touch was positioning the saxophones. The finished dolls are 21" high.
